Until April of 2020, he had never seen or at least been aware of Rose Breasted Grosbeaks. The morning two of them showed up at his feeders he was really excited. He has since found out they pass through his area of North Carolina for just a few weeks out of the year.
His painting 'Two Rose Breasted Grosbeak' is an abstract composition inspired by looking at nature in his woods through his kitchen window. The woods have so many subtle colors, especially as spring is wakening in the Blue Ridge Mountains in April.
His paintings progress from the Elements of Art (design, composition, color, textures, lines, values etc) in his imagination and his memories instead of looking at 'the window', or 'the woods' or 'birds', etc.
His artistic inspirations for this series are Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns, Milton Avery, Wassily Kandinsky and Henri Matisse.
