He painted Spring Equinox 2019 in March. He was inspired to paint it from a detail photo of a previous landscape painting of his. He used the detail photograph to sketch the basic composition on the canvas.
As a contemporary artist, he believes an essential part of a painting is the paint itself; he hopes to allow the paint to run, drip, cover, shade and express its properties on the canvas. As a student of painting, he loves to explore other artists work - looking for the how, when and why of a painting as much as the content or meaning. He loves Richard Diebenkorn's work and his approach; therefore he leaves traces of the underneath layers, marks, colors, etc. to be seen in his finished paintings.
He is influenced by Robert Motherwell's idea that no one painting can be an absolute statement, but that a body of work - many paintings - are necessary to fully explore an idea in painting.
