Abstract Landscape from the Air IV AA is a landscape composition. Steven has 3000 or so photographs taken with a DJI Phantom that he uses as references for his compositions. As this painting developed, Steven kept in mind the modern art idea that the medium itself (paint, charcoal, graphite,etc.) has an equal voice as the content/composition in telling the story on canvas. The lines, the drips, the thick and thin paint, the runs are all part of the conversation. Steven is influenced by the paintings and processes of Richard Diebenkorn; Steven loves the pentimenti aspect of Dienkorn's work and hopes to include pentimenti in his own work.
Steven agrees with Barnett Newman that its the content that attracts and keeps the viewer engaged. His goal is to finish paintings with captivating content.
